I Licutiani
In the picturesque harbor of San Giovanni Li Cuti, nestled in the heart of Catania, a group of dedicated swimmers gathers every day to enjoy the sea and its benefits. These are men and women of different ages: some are retired, others have lost their jobs long ago or have always lived on the margins of society, and some take advantage of their lunch break for a swim—a kind of ritual carried out in any season as an antidote to life’s hardships. It is here that a small, spontaneous, and informal community has emerged: the ‘Licutiani’ who today populate and color the narrow space of the Catanese pier with their bodies. This is a place where they feel welcomed and free to be themselves, safe from the need to fulfill a social role. Between swims, the dock seems to transform into a stage where extraordinary humanity is manifested through individual personalities. Sometimes, these personalities come into the spotlight, showing off their more eccentric and extravagant sides with ease, sparking amazement and laughter among tourists and passersby. For the Licutiani, the best hope for the future is to be able to return the next day, balanced on the lava rocks, the “smooth cuti,” and feel part of that very scene. Because San Giovanni Li Cuti is their home, their life.
