IV EDITION
01 august - 12 october 2025

San Lucido
(CS)

Radici comuni: luoghi

(Shared roots: places)

For the 4th edition of the Fotografia Calabria Festival, the theme "Shared roots: places" invites us to explore how the places we inhabit and traverse are an extension of the roots that connect us, not only to the past but also to our collective and personal identity. In this way, places become points of intersection between our individual history and our collective history, guardians of both visible and invisible bonds, speaking of belonging, evolution, and change.
On one hand, there are the physical and geographical places – cities, landscapes, buildings, small spaces, abandoned places – that are so familiar and present in our lives that they urge us to document, celebrate, and crystallize them, or, conversely, to take them for granted, only to rediscover them unexpectedly. On the other hand, there are the preconceived ideas and clichés we associate with certain places, influencing how we perceive, experience, or ignore them. Moreover, there are imaginary places: spaces that do not belong to the physical world but exist in the minds of those who create them, reflecting shared ideas and visions.
Every landscape, every building, every urban or rural space – even the most mundane or forgotten – is rooted in a memory that defines it. Through photography, this visual journey tells the story of these common roots: the deep connection that binds us to the places we inhabit, as well as those we have lost, removed, or that exist only in our dreams and perceptions.
With "Common roots: places," the festival invites us to look beyond the surface, to explore the complexity of the places around us, and to reflect on how these, in their continuous transformation, reflect who we are and what we are becoming.

Events and Workshops

  • A talk about the intersection of photography and artificial intelligence (A.I.), examining the evolution of images in communication and daily life. The instructor will present documentary photography projects and compare traditional photography with A.I. We will see how A.I. can expand creative perspectives and influence the perception of reality, with examples of TTI software like Midjourney. Open to all photography enthusiasts, bringing equipment is not mandatory, but you can use a laptop for the practical part.

Filippo Venturi explores human identity and societal issues. He has documented Asian dictatorships and neo-fascist movements in Europe. His work has been featured in publications such as National Geographic and Vanity Fair. Venturi has won awards for projects on the Korean peninsula and experiments with artificial intelligence. He participates in the 2023 Photo Vogue Festival as a speaker.

    Free Event until full capacity

Saturday, July 27th at 6:00 PM, San Lucido
Former Museum of the Sea, via F. Giuliani 36

  • Duration: 3 hours on the first day + 3 hours on the second day

Contemporary thinking regards images as living, changeable entities that can reshape our relationship with the world. We must always ask ourselves: what am I looking at? And how can I actively collaborate with the images I see and, to some extent, that see me? Building a personal toolkit helps to develop a new creative dimension.

The workshop includes both theoretical and practical parts, requiring active participation. A rediscovered family archive, once a private memory for family members, will be available for participants. They will choose one or more photographs to create new interpretations and stories, using both theoretical and practical tools to bring new meanings to the archive.

Recommended materials: Paper, pencils, markers, scissors, glue, and/or devices for digital processing.

First Day: Theory and analysis of the manipulative possibilities of photographs, with examples of contemporary artistic practices + Practical work on the archive.

Second Day: Presentation and analysis of individual works.
